7 Qualities of Great Music Educators

What qualities do you need to be a successful music educator? Most of you have been influenced by one of your formal teachers to pursue music education as a career. What traits did they possess that inspired you? New York State School Music Association editor Thomas N. Gellert points out seven qualities that music educators should possess.

1. Musicianship

It’s one thing to “teach” music, and an entirely different matter when one is a musician. For a music teacher to be effective, it’s essential that the teacher have excellent musicianship.

2. Humor

A sense of humor isn’t required, but someone who is capable of sharing a laugh at a funny situation (including laughing at oneself) will go much further in life than someone who takes life far too seriously.

3. Ability to inspire through leadership

This trait comes naturally to some, but many of us spend years trying to figure it out. Look up to those who have inspired you and strive to be like them.

4. Ability to work with your administrators

Champion the cause of music education but be aware of the complexities of your environment. Learn to adapt to tough situations and conflicting views, all while standing up for your cause.

5. Ability to anticipate needs and outcomes

Learn to rely on your intuition and problem-solving skills.

6. Continue musical growth

Keep your skills fresh and your mind challenged by joining a professional association or becoming an adjudicator. Continue your education by attending workshops and conferences.

7. Desire to bring others along

Motivate the next generation of music educators. Make a difference in others’ lives and give back what someone gave to you.

Thomas Gellert is a past MENC national chairperson for state editors and currently serves as the district director of music and art education for the Harborfields CSD in Greenlawn, NY. Gellert conducts the famed, Huntington Community Band in Long Island, NY.
