Support Your Support Staff

When a band program grows, often so does the staff. A director can get overwhelmed by managing band staff personnel. The task of general guidance, teaching performance technique, and assessing band members is already a huge responsibility.

MENC member Jennifer Mollenkopf says, "Our band parent organization hires (with director's recommendation) staff to assist at band camp - usually college students from nearby universities - who help run sectionals and teach drill or work with any students who need the extra boost at camp. This helps us get the job done, so to speak. After camp is over (one week) we continue to employ a flag line / auxiliary coordinator and a drumline instructor for the remainder of the season. We have a head director (me) and an assistant director daily in the classroom, but our extra folks are usually only available for after school practices (if any) and performances."

A few pointers to keep in mind as you develop your program:

1. Prepare: Get all the core staff together for regular meetings. Maintain an open-ended discussion of thoughts while staying focused on topic.

2. Inform: Provide specific information to each staff member about your expectations. Spend plenty of time harmonizing schedules and procedures between staff members.

3. Thank: Develop stable relationships with your staff. Recognize their accomplishments and assistance by:

  • Writing a personal note of thanks
  • Bringing a small breakfast item, such as a coffee or muffin
  • Creating a thank you banner with staff names
