July has come and gone and the temperature is looming in the 90s. Translation: It’s time for band camp!
MENC member Keith Taylor says, “The rigor of marching band is quite different from any other activity and very new to a lot of students every year. The mental focus coupled with the intense physical bursts is a unique kind of demand on folks.” He adds, “It has been done successfully for decades, so prepare for it properly and you will enjoy the experience.”
As you prepare yourself and your students for the upcoming days of camp, the following suggestions should be helpful.
- Drink a lot of water the day before - then hydrate during rehearsals.
- Wear a white hat. It’s probably the most overlooked opportunity to help shield you from intense sunshine.
- Eat well - students need to be aware that some foods and drinks actually dehydrate. (Stick with healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy and meats.)
- Wear sunscreen (in your lip balm, too).
- Wear flexible clothing and comfortable, athletic shoes.
- Get plenty of rest (before and during camp weeks).
- Acclimate yourself to the heat by spending time outdoors prior to camp.
By taking a few simple precautions, directors can ensure that summer band camps will be a safe and productive experience for everyone.
