Life After Tri-M

Music Education Track

With the nation facing a shortage of qualified music teachers, it’s extremely important that you encourage your Tri-M members to think about teaching music. Here are some resources to help them with that process:

Careers in Music
Encourage your members to explore MENC’s Career Center.

Auditioning Effectively
If they’re interested in further music education, help them learn How to Nail A College Entrance Audition.

Selecting a School
If they want to pick a good college, why not start with campuses that have MENC Collegiate chapters? After all, MENC Collegiate chapters help get students grounded in what they need to know to become effective music teachers and advocates for music education. View the list of colleges and universities with MENC Collegiate chapters.

Paying for College
There are multiple search engines, databases, and websites dedicated to financial aid, student loans, and scholarships. MENC's Scholarship Page is a good place to start.

Music Advocacy Track

Whether your students pursue the idea of becoming music teachers or not, all of your students are prime candidates to be music education advocates throughout their lives as concerned citizens, parents, and even school board members. Here are some resources you should make sure they know about.

MusicFriends
One of the best ways your students can support music education is to sign up for MusicFriends membership. Online at www.musicfriends.org, it’s free and it offers a variety of ways for high school graduates, parents, and concerned citizens to weigh in on the importance of music in the schools. Members get free updates on music education trends, policies, and events; recent inspirational articles giving voice to how music education affects the lives of students; and ways to have fun with music, such as sending free musical e-cards to friends and family.

MENC's Advocacy Site
Visit MENC's Advocacy Central for the latest music education legislation updates and advocacy resources.

SupportMusic.com
Another avenue for advocates, SupportMusic.com is a joint initiative of MENC, NAMM—International Music Products Association, and the Music Education Coalition. The site is specifically designed to give parents and others point-by-point information to defend school music programs at meetings where the programs are threatened. It’s a quick way to access all of the research music advocates need at their fingertips. Also included are links to elected representatives and other helpful resources.
