Wunderkind Little Amadeus - Episode One: "Solo for Amadeus"

A leitmotif is an associated melodic phrase or figure that accompanies the reappearance of an idea, person, or situation. In the series Wunderkind Little Amadeus, as the main characters appear, each one has a distinctive leitmotif.  In this lesson, students are introduced to the delightful world of Little Amadeus. They listen to Mozart's music, view the episode "Solo for Amadeus," make character mobiles, and create their own leitmotifs.

Students will explore the connection with music as a personal journal to your life.Students will better understand the way in which music affects listeners and creators emotionally.Students will explore the elements of music through critical listening and a lyrical analysis of a work by the Dixie Chicks.These lessons provided to you by VH1 Music Studio, Cable in the Classroom and MENC.Please note: Most VH1 Music Studio programs are centered around an artist or group.  This program recording is no longer available, but the accompanying lessons can be adapted for use in the classroom without the use of the program itself.Note to Teachers:  The programs viewed in conjunction with these lesson plans may include references, consistent with the eras portrayed, to substance abuse, violent acts, and topics of a sexual and/or political nature.  Because this may be considered inappropriate for classroom use in some communities, you are encouraged to review the programs before presenting them to your students, and if necessary, choose those sections that enhance your lesson and are acceptable for use in your classroom.

In this lesson, students will explore the role of a conductor of a typical orchestra via the orchestral application on the Wunderkind Little Amadeus Web site. Students will learn the four instrumental sections: Strings, Woodwinds, Brasses, & Percussion and conduct a virtual orchestra. Optional: View Wunderkind Little Amadeus.episode 119, "The Green Drops" (check your local PBS station) or watch Monti's Music Time "Discover an Orchestra" on-line.

In this lesson, students will direct and produce images for their own imagined music video. Students will view an application and the associated web application and understand storyline and timeline. Students will draw images from their own life that they can connect to a favorite song.Optional Extension: if PC’s are available for each child, they may use the application to drag images and create their own version of the trailer or film about Salzburg on the Wunderkind Little Amadeus Web site.

Students will be able to perform using proper words, rhythms, breathing techniques and harmony. Students will use proper vocabulary for D.S. al Coda, Coda, Crescendo, Improvise and Accent. Students will sing solo and as an ensemble while following a conductor.

To prepare for a performance of “There’s Magic in the Music” with the World’s Largest Concert, this lesson will focus on the performance of the song, with an emphasis on learning accurate rhythms through the use of unpitched percussion instruments and small groups.
